Understanding How Dental Insurance Works

Unlike medical insurance, which is focused on treating problems after they’ve occurred, dental insurance aims to encourage patients to be proactive with their oral health. Preventive care is most often covered in full by dental insurance companies because it reduces the chance of future problems. However, should restorative dentistry be required (i.e., dental crowns, fillings, root canals, etc.), you can expect your plan to partially cover the necessary services.

What Your Dental Insurance Plan Covers

Until we have a chance to review your policy, we cannot tell you exactly what your plan covers. However, there is a similar structure most dental insurance companies use to build their benefits:

  • Preventive care (i.e., checkups, cleanings, X-rays): 80-100%
  • Minor restorative care (i.e., fillings): 70-80%
  • Major restorative care (i.e., dental crowns, root canals, etc.): 50%

Cosmetic dentistry is typically not covered because it is considered “elective,” and orthodontic treatment may or may not be included in your coverage.
